  • EPA 205: Science Education in Early Childhood

Instructor: Dr. M. Kalogiannakis

Course content: We will be focusing on the following areas: (a) children’s conceptions about concepts and phenomena of the natural world; (b) learning theories and their effect to the development of frameworks for the organization of activities concerning natural sciences in early childhood; (c) teaching strategies in Science Education for preschool education; (d) incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in early childhood for science education; (e) activities for concepts and phenomena of the natural world for preschool age (gravity, electricity, shadows, light, sound, plants, solids, liquids, gases, environment, greenhouse effect, etc.).

Methods of instruction, learning and assessment: Lecturing in class, Discussions – Work presentation – Experiential classes. Hybrid course offered at distance in the Learning Management System of the University of Crete (e-class) in the following link: http://eclass.edc.uoc.gr/eclass/  (in Greek).

  • EPA 602: Statistics in Education I

Instructor: Dr. M. Linardakis

Course content: Understanding Statistics as a tool for data analysis in education, and interpretation of the results.

Students are intended to be able, after the completion of the course, to understand basic statistical concepts and be able to attend literature on quantitative surveys. Moreover, they will be able to conduct assessments with descriptive statistics and a limited number of statistical analyses.

  • EPA 605: Statistics in Education II

Instructor: Dr. M. Linardakis

Course content: Descriptive statistics. Graphs. Correlation. Simple linear regression. Multiple regression. 2 independent samples t-test. Paired samples t-test. One- and two-way analysis of variance. Interactions. Contingency tables, X2 test of independence, Fisher’s exact test. Introduction to SPSS, applications, analysis of real data sets.

  • DAS IIIa: Students’ practice in preschool settings

Instructor: Dr. S. Nikolidaki

Course content: The course aims at familiarizing students with the teaching process in real educational pre-school settings. Students are planning, organizing, implementing, analyzing, modifying and evaluating their teaching plans in schools within a weekly program.  

Methods of instruction, learning and assessment:

  • In University Class: Laboratory exercises, presentations, discussions, video projections, simulation, problem-solving learning, work plans, thematic approaches, invitation of experts, research methods (observation, interview), reflection and teaching evaluation and self-assessment techniques

 

  • In Schools: Students’ Teaching/ Students’ Developing observation skills/ Reflection on students’ practice (what worked well, what could have been done differently)

  • EPA 114: Language development and Pedagogy of the Preschool Child

Instructor: Dr. M. Tzakosta

Course content: Τhe course aims to investigate language development under the scope of contemporary psycholinguistic theories and their pedagogical implications for language teaching and learning. Our discussions will be based on true child data who acquire Greek as a mother language.

  • EPA 509: Language genesis and development

Instructor: Dr. M. Tzakosta

Course content: The course explores how and why languages emerge, how they change, why certain linguistic rules are and remain powerful diachronically while others deteriorate, what needs render the emergence of writing systems essential.

  • SPA 213: Seminar for Teaching Educational Activities with Information and Communication Technologies.

Course content: The course aims at familiarizing students with the teaching process in real educational pre-school settings. Students are planning, organizing, implementing, analyzing, modifying and evaluating their teaching plans in schools within a weekly program. Students are expected to show a profound and reflective understanding of their teaching practice along with a more elaborate design of their teaching plans.

  • SEM 137: Seminar of School and Preschool Pedagogy: the role of language in teaching and in learning.

Instructor: Dr. M. Kreza

Course content: The aim of this seminar is for the students to become familiar with the different ways in which language (especially oral speech, but written speech as well) and non-verbal communication can constitute, for teachers, a teaching tool, but also for students, a means to acquire knowledge and develop skills in various learning areas of the preschool education.

  • SEM 603: Quantitative Research in Education using Scales of Measurements

Instructor: Dr. M. Linardakis

Course content: The course aims at familiarizing the students on the use of normalized scales of measurement that assess the performance of preschool children (e.g. Raven test for measuring non-verbal intelligence, Pea-body scale for measuring fine and gross motor skills, VMI scale for Εye-motor coordination, etc.). Quantitative data analysis using statistical packages. Factor analysis. Essay writing with the results.

  • EPA 137: dialects in education: the case of the dialect of Crete

Instructor: Dr. M. Tzakosta
